Legacy Lands of Hilo Palikū

Makahanaloa Fishing Association is dedicated to the pono stewardship of the shoreline of Hilo Palikū in perpetuity. To this end we continue to try and preserve bioculturally significant areas of the coast. Makahanaloa has lead this process through public and private partnerships.

Kawainui

The County of Hawai'i purchased Kawainui in January of 2026 under the Public Open Lands and Natural Resources Commission Process. Makahanaloa Fishing Association needs your help in planning for the continued stewardship of this 'åina.

Planning

We're starting planning for Kawainui. What do you folks want to see for this place?? If you have any ideas, dreams, or thoughts for Kawainui that you would like to share, please use this LINK to let us know. We will be working closely with the County PONC Program to create a management plan to guide responsible, long-term stewardship of Kawainui.

Watch our new video of the 'aha (blessing) of Kawainui as soon as it's uploaded. Stay Tuned!!

Stewardship

Makahanaloa has secured access to a greenhouse to grow native shoreline plants through a generous community member. If you're interested in helping out or learning more about this effort please do the short survey here.

Hakalauiki

In partnership with Kāmaulihou, Makahanaloa Fishing Association has helped to apply to the Public Open Lands Commission once again to preserve a conservation easement in perpetuity for the community of Hakalau, Hilo. Read more about how you can kōkua below.

ʻĀina Hakalauiki

The shoreline parcel of Hakalauiki is 31.1 acres. It contains two streams and the famed fishing area of Manamanas. This shoreline has been fished for as long as Kanaka have lived in Hilo Palikū. Currently the parcel is on the market, which makes this opportunity urgent. This effort is being led by Kāmaulihou, a 501c3 whose mission is to generate profound Aloha across Hawaiʻi, heighten island consciousness, and increase wellbeing for people and ʻāina.

Testimony Need

We need your help to advocate for Hakalauiki. Please testify to the Commission.  A form letter is HERE if you need help.

This vision is led by Aunty Kekuhi Kealiʻikanakaole, and her vision for this place is breathtaking. She paints the picture of an infinite ahuʻula of lihilihi lehua from the forestline to the shoreline
